"we are here to annoy people and we are only just beginning" Adam Sagir
picture napalm death fighting dillinger escape plan over today is the days best record in eyehategod s back yard and you'll be getting close to the shitkicking diabolism that is London based four piece labrat.
In the early days when the line up was less concrete, Labrat gained a reputation as a brutal and uncompromising outfit by performing their filth in the countless shitholes of England and Ireland but things really came together for them in early 1998 when founder Nathan Perrier and long term vocalist rob mccauslan teamed up with steve le voguer, adam sagir and john davey (departed 2000).
This unholy alliance spewed out the "theme for a downer and anthems of rejection " E.P. which came out on fear family assassins records . The U.K. metal press, who were taken aback with the violent, belligerent mix of hardcore, sludgey grind and dextrous musicianship, gave the band their first exposure in their magazines. The band had previously only featured in a fistful of DIY fanzines which had helped spread the word long before.
Setting of on a short, self managed/financed tour the band made the most of their time and set small but excited crowds on fire across the country leading them headlong into the flurry of activity that would be maintained for the next four years.
March 99 saw the band playing radio shows alongside napalm death , iron monkey and medulla nocte which were broadcast to in excess of 250.000 people and supporting such leading lights as skinlab , earthtone 9 . This has continued up to the present day (over 200 shows) seeing the band hold their ground with amongst others; pulka's, god dethroned, subvert, candlemass, crowbar, charger, raging speedhorn, cathedral, mistress, god fobid, shadows fall, strapping young lad, archangel, lostprophets, my ruin, dukes of nothing, anti nowhere league, breed 77, narcosis, total fucking destruction,
Sticking to their DIY roots, the band have always been keen to include tracks and record tracks for compilation releases and in the period prior to signing with visible noise they had tracks on numerous compilations including; century media blitz II, louder than the crowd (gut), visibility (visible noise), barricades and brocken dreams, a tribute to conflict (blackfish), helping you back to work vol I (lockjaw). This only served to build a larger and more loyal fan base, raising general awareness of the bands gargantuan hate anthems and devastating, unpredictable and sometimes downright dangerous live shows.
"maybe they're the ultimate nihilistic experience and none of us noticed." (the org)
In late 2001 a deal was struck with visible noise, presenting them the opportunity to spread their muck across much of the record buying world. The band returned to the lab and constructed what would become "ruining it for everyone", their debut full length release. The band entered londons Fortress II studios in late January and emerged in February with the 3 heaviest reels of magnetic tape ever carried into a mastering suite. After a remix through the mixing desk that recorded led zeppelin 3 and 4 the album was released in may to unanimous acclaim from fans and critics alike getting 8/10's and 4/5's across the board.
"absurdist spazzmonoisegrindcore attack" terrorizor
"ferocious, unremitting and simply overpowering" metal hammer
"you'll be hard-pushed to find anything harsher, more brain-crushing and more devastating than this" rock sound
"a beautifully fucked-up celebration of british extremity" kerrang
Sadly, the harmony was disrupted in june when, 3 weeks after the albums release the enigmatic McCauslan departed to become a full time parent. However, determined not to allow their hard work to go unnoticed, the remaining 3 called on old friends Martin Ives and Jamie Farrel to climb aboard and just two weeks later began a spate of gigs which kept them busy for the whole year including incendiary tours with; EYEHATEGOD, skinlab and freebase, necrophagia, decapitated, the bezerker red harvest and insision , and visiting countries like Belgium, Holland, isreal, and Ireland.
A change in circumstance lead Rob back to the fold in june 2003 when the band set off as main support on relapse heavyweights mastodon s 1 st headline tour of the U.K. Labrat thrilled audiences nightly, battering people with their tight, challenging arrangements and viscous attitude towards performing live.
With all cylinders firing again, and gigs in italy, malta and Iceland under their belts, the band are currently holed up in various locations working on compositions for their second contribution to the ruin of music as we know it. With the working title "stealing from a whore " "and tracks including "the fucking stitch up", "cock fight" and "paint the windows black" it seems they have lost none of the vitriol which propelled the 1 st record to such depraved heights.
Look out for labrat in 2005, the clock is ticking.......
